About

Sister distillery to Glenfiddich, standing beside it on the William Grant estate in Dufftown. Famous for maintaining the 'Five Rare Crafts' of whisky-making: its own barley fields, floor maltings (one of very few in Scotland), coppersmith, cooperage, and Malt Master David Stewart MBE (the longest-serving in the industry until his retirement). The DoubleWood 12 (finished in sherry casks) is one of the most popular premium single malts globally. 11 stills (5 wash, 6 spirit). Known for honey, vanilla, and oak character.

Traditional oak casks, finished in Caribbean rum casks
4/4 Tasting

Sight
Deep gold with rich amber tones; warm and inviting with slow, heavy legs indicating the rum cask influence on body and sweetness
Smell
Lush tropical sweetness layered over the classic Balvenie honey-malt base. Ripe banana, toffee apple, brown sugar, and a hint of molasses from the rum cask. Vanilla and coconut from the bourbon maturation peek through. Warm, almost dessert-like, with gentle toasted oak and a tropical fruit basket quality
Sip
Immediately rich and sweet — the rum cask influence is unmistakable. Brown sugar, toffee, ripe banana, and tropical fruit (mango, pineapple) dance over the Balvenie honey-vanilla backbone. Creamy mouthfeel with gentle oak spice providing structure. Mid-palate brings butterscotch, vanilla fudge, and a hint of dark treacle. Fuller bodied than the DoubleWood 12
Savor
Long, sweet finish with lingering toffee, tropical fruit warmth, and brown sugar. The rum cask adds a final molasses note that distinguishes this from any sherry or bourbon finish. Clean and warm with a gentle ginger spice that emerges at the very end

Sight
Warm, rich gold with amber highlights; clean and bright with medium legs suggesting a gentle, honeyed viscosity
Smell
Immediately welcoming — Balvenie's signature honey and vanilla, layered with sweet oak, gentle cinnamon spice, and a whisper of sherry-derived dried fruit. Malty cereal sweetness underneath, like warm shortbread. The sherry finish adds fig and orange marmalade complexity without dominating
Sip
Smooth, honeyed entry that opens into layers of vanilla, toasted oak, and butterscotch. The DoubleWood maturation reveals itself mid-palate: bourbon cask sweetness (vanilla, caramel, coconut) meets sherry cask richness (dried fruit, nutmeg, cinnamon). Malty cereal backbone holds everything together. Medium body with a creamy, rounded mouthfeel
Savor
Medium finish with lingering honey, gentle spice, and a drying oaky warmth. The sherry influence adds a final flourish of dried fruit and dark chocolate before fading to sweet malt and vanilla. Clean and balanced — the quintessential anytime Speyside

Sight
Deep amber gold with warm copper highlights; richer and more complex appearance than the 12yo DoubleWood, with slow, viscous legs
Smell
An elevated, more complex version of the DoubleWood concept. Rich honey, dried apricot, marzipan, and toasted oak. The extra five years add leather, polished wood, and a gentle tobacco note absent in the 12yo. Sherry influence is deeper — more fig and walnut than the 12yo lighter raisin and orange. Sweet baking spices throughout
Sip
Silky smooth with remarkable depth. The Balvenie honey-vanilla core is now wrapped in layers of dried fruit, marzipan, leather, and polished wood. Oak tannins are perfectly integrated — assertive enough to provide structure but never bitter. Dark chocolate, cinnamon, and toasted almond emerge mid-palate. The extra maturation has added a gravitas and complexity that the 12yo only hints at. Full bodied with an oily, luxurious mouthfeel
Savor
Long, complex finish that evolves — honey and dried fruit first, then leather and oak spice, finally a lingering malty warmth. The interplay between bourbon cask sweetness and sherry cask richness is more nuanced and prolonged than the 12yo. A masterclass in what five extra years of maturation achieve

Sight
Deep burnished copper with ruby-rose highlights from the port cask; rich and luminous with slow, coating legs. The most visually distinctive expression in the core range
Smell
Elegant marriage of Balvenie honey-malt character with port wine berry sweetness. Ripe red berries (raspberry, strawberry), cherry, and plum compote alongside vanilla, honey, and a delicate floral note. Gentle nuttiness and subtle dried rose petal. More refined and less overtly sweet than the Caribbean Cask — the port adds sophistication rather than tropical exuberance
Sip
Beautifully balanced. The port finish adds red berry and plum sweetness that weaves through the Balvenie honey-vanilla base rather than dominating it. Cherry, raspberry compote, vanilla, and gentle spice. The 21 years of maturation bring oak complexity, soft leather, and a hint of dark chocolate. Silky mouthfeel — more elegant than powerful. The fruitiness shifts from fresh berries to stewed fruit mid-palate
Savor
Long, graceful finish. Red berry warmth fades slowly through honey, vanilla, and gentle oak spice. A final whisper of dried rose and dark chocolate. The port influence lingers as a berry warmth rather than a wine note. One of the most elegant finishes in the dataset — understated rather than dramatic

Sight
Rich mahogany-amber; deep, burnished copper tones with thick, slow legs. Noticeably darker than the DoubleWood or Caribbean Cask, reflecting full-term sherry maturation
Smell
Deep sherry richness — dark dried fruit (fig, date, raisin), treacle, dark chocolate, and walnut. The Balvenie honey signature is present but transformed, becoming darker and more complex — buckwheat honey rather than heather. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange peel add warmth. Each single barrel varies, but the profile is consistently sherry-dominant with Balvenie malty sweetness underlying
Sip
Full-bodied and richly sherried. Dark dried fruit (fig, date, plum), dark chocolate, toffee, and toasted walnut. The Balvenie malt backbone adds a cereal sweetness that prevents the sherry from becoming overwhelming. Spice notes of cinnamon, allspice, and black pepper emerge mid-palate. At 47.8% ABV non-chill filtered, the texture is oily and mouth-coating. Each barrel is genuinely different — some lean fruity, others more nutty
Savor
Long, rich finish with lingering dark fruit, chocolate, and walnut bitterness. Warming spice and a gentle tannic dryness from the sherry wood. The Balvenie honey returns at the very end, providing a sweet closure to the deep sherry experience

Sight
Deep amber with antique gold highlights; rich, luminous, and stately with thick, slow legs that cling to the glass
Smell
Profound complexity. The Balvenie honey is now deep and burnished — beeswax and aged heather honey rather than light floral honey. Rich vanilla, aged oak, leather, dried apricot, and a gentle tobacco sweetness. Twenty-five years in a single American oak barrel have created a unique personality that no vatting could replicate. Each cask is genuinely individual
Sip
Magnificent depth and complexity. Layers unfold slowly: honey and vanilla first, then dried fruit (apricot, peach), toasted oak, dark chocolate, and a whisper of white pepper. The single barrel character makes each bottle unique, but all share the Balvenie signature of honeyed malt meeting wood-driven complexity. At 47.8% non-chill filtered, the texture is rich and mouth-coating. The oak influence is assertive but never overpowering
Savor
Exceptionally long finish. Honey, oak, and dried fruit persist and evolve for minutes. A gentle warmth of vanilla, tobacco, and polished leather fades very gradually. The final note is pure Balvenie: sweet malt and honey, unchanged after a quarter century in oak

Sight
Deep, rich mahogany-amber with antique copper tones; viscous and weighty with extremely slow legs. Thirty years have concentrated both color and body
Smell
Extraordinary depth and refinement. The Balvenie honey has evolved into something ancient and complex — beeswax, aged mead, and honeycomb. Rich oak, polished leather, antique furniture, and old library books. Dark dried fruit (fig, date, prune) and dark chocolate with espresso undertones. Gentle tobacco sweetness and sandalwood. A whisky that reveals new layers over twenty minutes in the glass
Sip
Opulent and multi-dimensional. The palate unfolds in waves: first, the deep honey-toffee-vanilla Balvenie core; then dark fruit, chocolate, and espresso; then leather, tobacco, and polished wood; finally, a gentle spice warmth (cinnamon, clove, ginger). Three decades of maturation have created perfect integration — no single element dominates. Full bodied, silky, and mouth-coating. A meditation whisky that demands slow attention
Savor
Remarkably long finish — measured in minutes, not seconds. Honey and oak warmth persist, joined by dark chocolate, leather, dried fruit, and a gentle sandalwood-incense quality. The final lingering note is the Balvenie signature — honeyed malt sweetness — proving that even after 30 years, the distillery character survives. One of the great Speyside finishes

Traditional oak casks, finished in Madeira casks
4/4 Tasting
View tasting notes
Sight
Deep amber-gold with warm copper-rose highlights; the Madeira cask finishing adds a subtle rose tint similar to but distinct from the PortWood
Smell
A now-discontinued predecessor to the PortWood 21, using Madeira casks instead of port pipes. The Madeira influence adds candied orange, dried apricot, and a distinctive caramelized sweetness different from port berry richness. The Balvenie honey base is present, joined by toasted almond, vanilla, and gentle baking spice. The Madeira nutty, caramelized character creates a unique expression
Sip
Richly sweet but with a distinctive savory-nutty edge from the Madeira cask. Candied orange, dried apricot, caramel, and toasted almond over the Balvenie honey-vanilla-malt base. The Madeira influence is different from both port and sherry — more oxidative and nutty, less obviously fruity. Dark honey, gentle oak spice, and a hint of salted caramel mid-palate. Medium-full body
Savor
Medium-long finish with lingering candied orange, toasted almond, and caramel. The Madeira nutty-oxidative character fades slowly through honey and oak warmth. Now discontinued and highly sought after

Sight
Deep amber-gold with warm copper highlights; twenty-six years have concentrated the color. Full, thick legs suggest both age and substance
Smell
Extraordinary complexity from the combination of peated malt and extended maturation. The peat is now completely integrated — not smoky per se, but adding an earthy, chocolatey depth to the Balvenie honey-malt character. Rich dark chocolate, espresso, toffee, aged honey, and toasted cereals. Dried fruit (apricot, fig), polished oak, and gentle leather. The peated malt creates a roasty, malty depth — think dark-roasted barley, Ovaltine, dark bread — not Islay smoke
Sip
Profound and unique. The dark barley character has evolved over 26 years into something entirely its own — a deeply malty, chocolatey, almost coffee-like richness layered over the Balvenie honey base. Dark chocolate, espresso, treacle, and toasted cereals dominate, with dried fruit and gentle oak spice supporting. The peat is invisible as smoke but contributes an earthy complexity and savory depth. Full bodied, oily, and mouth-coating
Savor
Very long, complex finish. Dark chocolate and espresso fade through dried fruit and toffee to the Balvenie honey signature. The peated malt contributes a lingering earthy warmth — not smoke, but terroir. Polished oak, leather, and a hint of tobacco at the very end

Deepest mahogany with dark amber-brown tones; the color of sixty-two years in oak. Extraordinarily viscous with legs that barely move
Smell
Beyond description in conventional terms. Over six decades, the Balvenie spirit and oak have merged into something transcendent. Ancient honey — beeswax, propolis, aged mead. Sandalwood, myrrh, and incense. Dried rose, ancient leather, museum-quality furniture. The honey signature that defines every Balvenie is still present but transformed into something rarefied and spiritual. Dark fruit (prune, fig), aged pipe tobacco, and old library
Sip
A whisky that exists outside time. The oak has not overwhelmed the spirit — the Balvenie malt sweetness has survived six decades, appearing as a deep, burnished honey and ancient toffee. Dark fruit, sandalwood, leather, and tobacco layer over this honeyed core. Espresso, dark chocolate, and aged walnut add depth. The tannins are soft and velvety. Every sip reveals something new. Light bodied by now but intense in flavor concentration

Staggering complexity. The Balvenie honey has matured into something almost sacred — aged beeswax, honeycomb, and ancient mead. Deep sherry influence delivers fig, date, prune, and treacle. Polished antique mahogany, museum leather, old library, and aged pipe tobacco. Sandalwood, dried rose, and gentle incense. The sherry and spirit have merged completely
Sip
Profoundly moving. Fifty years of sherry cask maturation have created a liquid that transcends conventional tasting notes. Ancient honey, treacle, and dark fruit form the foundation. Polished wood, antique leather, dark chocolate, and espresso add layers. The tannins are velvet-soft. The Balvenie malt character remains — honeyed, sweet, cereal-warm. Light bodied but intensely concentrated. Every sip is a meditation

Rich, deep honey, dark fruit, dark chocolate, espresso, and polished oak. Leather, tobacco, and sandalwood add sophistication. The tannins are perfectly integrated. At 46% ABV, there is genuine power. Full-bodied for its age, with an oily, luxurious mouthfeel. Widely considered the best value in ultra-aged Balvenie

Golden amber with warm, honeyed tones; the French oak finishing adds a subtle richness beyond standard bourbon-matured expressions. Medium-full legs

Distinctive and refined — the Pineau des Charentes cask brings a grape-wine sweetness distinct from sherry or port. White grape, apricot, vanilla, and the signature Balvenie honey. Gentle floral notes (jasmine, white blossom) from the French oak. Creme patissiere and golden raisin. More elegant and less overtly fruity than the Caribbean Cask or PortWood
Sip
Elegant and refined. The French oak Pineau des Charentes finishing brings white grape, stone fruit (apricot, peach), and a creamy patisserie quality. Sight
Warm gold with a slight amber edge; indistinguishable from standard Balvenie in appearance. The peat is in the spirit, not the color
Smell
A fascinating hybrid — the classic Balvenie honey-vanilla-malt character threaded with gentle peat smoke. The peat is aromatic and heathery (closer to Highland Park than Islay), adding campfire, dried herbs, and a subtle earthiness to the honeyed base. The combination of honey and peat smoke creates a unique aroma unlike any other expression in the dataset. Orchard fruit and gentle oak underneath
Sip
The Balvenie paradox made literal — honey meets smoke. The entry is classic Balvenie sweetness (honey, vanilla, malt), but mid-palate the peat arrives as a gentle, smoky warmth rather than an aggressive phenolic blast. Campfire smoke, heathery herbs, and a touch of char weave through butterscotch, orchard fruit, and cereal malt. At 48.3% ABV, enough power to let the peat express itself without overwhelming the Balvenie DNA. Medium-full body

Medium-long finish where the peat and honey intertwine rather than compete. Gentle smoke warmth, sweet malt, and a hint of charred oak fade together. The final note is the Balvenie honey signature — the peat bows out gracefully, leaving the distillery character intact

Bright gold with warm amber tones; the virgin American oak contributes a slightly richer color than standard refill casks. Medium-full legs
Smell
Distinct from any other Balvenie — the toasted (not charred) virgin American oak delivers intense vanilla, caramel corn, butterscotch, and sweet coconut. The Balvenie honey base is amplified rather than transformed. Brown sugar, creme brulee, and gentle cinnamon. Less dried fruit than sherry-influenced expressions — pure sweet oak meeting malty spirit
Sip

The Balvenie malt sweetness is prominent — honey, cereals, and biscuit — creating a dialogue between oak sweetness and spirit sweetness. Brown sugar and creme brulee mid-palate. Gentle spice (cinnamon, vanilla pod) provides structure. Medium-full body with a smooth, rounded mouthfeel. One of the sweetest Balvenies in the range

Deep amber-mahogany with rich copper tones; the original Tun series produced darker, more sherry-influenced results than later Tun 1509 batches. Thick, weighty legs
Smell
The legendary predecessor to Tun 1509. Deeper, darker, and more sherry-dominant than its successor. Rich Christmas cake, treacle, fig, date, and dark chocolate. The bourbon cask contribution is more subtle — vanilla and honeycomb peek through the deep sherry curtain. Worn leather, polished walnut, and gentle tobacco. Immensely complex and rewarding
Sip
Opulent and richly sherried. Dark dried fruit (fig, date, raisin, prune), treacle, dark chocolate, and espresso. The bourbon cask influence provides a sweet vanilla-honey backbone that prevents the sherry from becoming ponderous. Walnut, cinnamon, and allspice add complexity. Full bodied and mouth-coating at 50.6%. The Tun 1401 batches are generally considered richer and more sherry-forward than the later 1509 series

Sight
Rich amber-gold with warm copper tones; each batch has its own subtle color variation depending on the sherry-to-bourbon cask ratio. Full, slow legs
Smell
Often cited as one of the finest Tun 1509 releases. Rich honey, dark toffee, Christmas cake, and marzipan. Orange marmalade, dried apricot, and candied ginger. The sherry butts contribute dark dried fruit and chocolate; the bourbon barrels add vanilla and coconut brightness. Complex and inviting at cask strength
Sip
Sumptuous and multi-layered. Rich honey and toffee form the Balvenie foundation, then dark fruit (raisin, fig, cherry), dark chocolate, and marzipan from the sherry casks arrive mid-palate. The bourbon cask contribution adds vanilla, caramel, and a bright citrus note. Candied ginger and cinnamon add spice complexity. Full bodied and mouth-coating at 52.2%. Water reveals additional layers of stone fruit and floral notes. David Stewart vatting art at its finest
