Sight
Pure, luminous gold with warm amber highlights; bright and clean with delicate legs suggesting elegance over weight
Smell
Exquisitely balanced. Ripe Japanese peach (white peach), strawberry, and red cherry open first — classic Yamazaki fruit. Beneath, a whisper of sandalwood and incense from Mizunara oak, distinguishing this immediately from any Scottish malt. Honey, vanilla custard, light cinnamon, and a floral note of cherry blossom. Delicate, precise, and harmonious — nothing dominates
Sip
Silky and refined. Strawberry, white peach, and Muscat grape provide a fruit-forward elegance unlike any Speyside. The Mizunara influence emerges mid-palate — sandalwood, a hint of coconut, and a unique incense-like spice that has no Scottish equivalent. Butterscotch, honey, light clove, and clean malt. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied but remarkably smooth, with a precision that reflects Japanese craftsmanship
Savor
Medium-long finish of exquisite clarity. Sandalwood and gentle incense linger alongside fading strawberry and honey. Light oak tannins provide structure without dryness. A clean, almost meditative close — the whisky equivalent of a perfectly arranged ikebana

Sight
Deep amber-copper with reddish mahogany notes; rich and lustrous with slow, elegant legs
Smell
Profound and multi-layered. Dark chocolate, raisin, and dried cherry from sherry cask maturation form the foundation. Mizunara oak adds its signature sandalwood, temple incense, and oriental spice — here more pronounced than in the 12yo. Underneath, blackberry compote, coffee, toffee, and aged oak. The complexity is extraordinary — a symphony of East and West maturation traditions
Sip
Opulent yet controlled. Rich dark chocolate, espresso, blackberry jam, and dried fig from the sherry casks create a luxurious base. The Mizunara contribution is magnificent — sandalwood, incense, coconut cream, and an exotic spice note like star anise that cannot be found in any Scottish whisky. Ripe plum, dark toffee, and subtle clove. Full-bodied but never heavy — the Japanese precision ensures balance even amid richness
Savor
Very long, contemplative finish. Sandalwood and incense from Mizunara fade slowly through dark chocolate, dried fruit, and gentle oak spice. The interplay of sherry sweetness and Mizunara exoticism creates a finish of rare beauty. Coffee and dark toffee linger. A whisky that rewards patience and demands attention

Sight
Deep mahogany-amber with copper-red depth; extraordinarily rich and lustrous with slow, oily legs
Smell
Transcendent complexity. This is the pinnacle of Mizunara-sherry interaction — 25 years have allowed the Japanese oak to fully express its character. Deep sandalwood, kyara (Japanese aloeswood/incense), and coconut oil alongside rich sherry notes of dark plum, Christmas cake, and old leather. Dark chocolate, praline, dried rose, and ancient cedar. A nose of cathedral-like depth and reverence
Sip
Magnificent and utterly unique. The Mizunara oak here achieves something no European or American oak can — sandalwood, kyara incense, coconut, and an oriental spice complexity of lemongrass, star anise, and Sichuan pepper that has no parallel in Scotch whisky. The sherry element provides dark fruit opulence — black cherry, prune, Christmas cake — while aged oak adds cedar, old leather, and dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is silky, concentrated, and endlessly layered. This is a whisky that proves Mizunara is not a gimmick but a genuinely different maturation tradition
Savor
Extraordinarily long and evolving finish. Sandalwood and kyara incense linger for many minutes alongside dark cherry, dark chocolate, and cedar. The Mizunara spice — star anise, lemongrass — provides an exotic afterglow that no amount of European oak could replicate. A meditation on time, wood, and the distinctive character of Japanese oak

Pale gold with pinkish-copper blush from wine cask influence; light and bright with fine legs
Smell
Fresh and approachable, yet distinctly Japanese. Strawberry, raspberry, and red cherry dominate — bright berry fruit amplified by the Bordeaux wine cask influence. Vanilla, light toffee, and a gentle hint of Mizunara sandalwood. Floral notes of cherry blossom and rose petal. Lighter and more wine-influenced than the age-statement range
Sip
Elegant and fruity. The Bordeaux wine cask is the dominant influence here — strawberry jam, raspberry, cranberry, and red cherry create a vibrant berry character. Light vanilla and toffee from bourbon wood, with just a whisper of Mizunara sandalwood and cinnamon. Medium-light body with a clean, smooth texture. This is the accessible gateway to Yamazaki — less complex than the 12yo but immediately appealing

Light gold with warm amber edge; clean and bright with fine legs
Smell
A lighter, more approachable precursor to the 12yo — discontinued due to stock shortages. Fresh peach, pear, and light cherry. Honey, vanilla, and a gentle floral note. Less Mizunara influence than the 12yo, with a simpler, more malt-forward character. Clean and fresh — the gateway Yamazaki that introduced many to Japanese whisky before its discontinuation
Sip
Light and elegant. White peach, pear, and light cherry provide gentle fruit. Honey, vanilla, and light butterscotch from American oak. A hint of sherry sweetness adds dried fruit warmth. Less complex than the 12yo and with minimal Mizunara influence, but charming and well-crafted. Medium-light body with a smooth, approachable texture

Sight
Deep burnished amber-copper; extraordinarily concentrated with very slow, oily legs. Remarkable colour preservation for a spirit half a century old in Mizunara — testament to the cask's unique extraction properties
Smell
One of the rarest and most expensive Japanese whiskies ever produced. The nose is a lifetime of Mizunara interaction — sandalwood so rich it approaches oud, kyara incense of extraordinary depth, coconut oil, and aged cedar. Beneath, the spirit's fruit has evolved into concentrated dried persimmon, dark plum compote, and aged tea (gyokuro). Dark honey, beeswax, and ancient leather. The complexity is staggering — each return to the glass reveals new dimensions
Sip
Beyond conventional tasting notes. Fifty years in Mizunara has created a flavour profile that exists nowhere else in the whisky world. Sandalwood and kyara incense of supernatural intensity. Coconut cream, dried persimmon, aged dark plum, and gyokuro green tea. The wood's tannins have mellowed over five decades into a silky, almost waxy texture. Dark honey, praline, and ancient cedar. The high ABV (55%) suggests remarkable cask integrity. This is the ultimate expression of Mizunara's potential — proof that Japanese oak, given sufficient time, produces something fundamentally different from any Western oak species
Savor
Essentially infinite finish. Sandalwood and kyara incense linger for an extraordinarily long time, evolving through dried fruit, ancient tea, and cedar. The finish has a spiritual quality — the Japanese concept of 'ichi-go ichi-e' (one time, one meeting) made liquid. Each sip is unrepeatable

Sight
Light gold, bright and clean; the lightest expression in the Yamazaki single-cask-type range with fine legs
Smell
Yamazaki's spirit character in its most transparent cask environment. Bourbon barrels amplify vanilla, honey, and butterscotch while letting the fruit shine through — white peach, Muscat grape, and fresh pear. Gentle oak, light coconut, and a fresh cereal malt note. The sandalwood is barely there — this is about the spirit, not the wood. Floral (cherry blossom) and fresh
Sip
Pure and elegant. Bourbon barrel maturation showcases Yamazaki's inherent fruit character — white peach, pear, Muscat grape, and light citrus (yuzu). Vanilla, butterscotch, and honey provide American oak sweetness. Light coconut, gentle cinnamon, and clean malt. The mouthfeel is medium-light and silky. A masterclass in restraint — the polar opposite of the Sherry Cask series. Every note comes from the dialogue between spirit and bourbon wood, with no Mizunara complexity to distract
Savor
Medium finish with vanilla, honey, and white peach fading through gentle oak. Clean, fresh, and refined. The finish reveals how much of Yamazaki's character comes from the spirit itself rather than from exotic cask types

The Limited Edition series showcases Yamazaki's blending artistry across multiple cask types. Strawberry and cherry from younger components, dried fruit from sherry casks, and the characteristic sandalwood-incense from Mizunara. Vanilla, dark chocolate, and orange peel. Well-integrated and harmonious — the blender's art in achieving balance across three distinct wood influences
Sip
Multi-layered and well-balanced. Strawberry, cherry, and red berry fruit provide brightness. Sherry casks contribute dried fruit (raisin, fig) and dark chocolate. Mizunara adds its signature sandalwood and incense. American oak provides vanilla and butterscotch structure. Medium-full body with a silky texture. Ginger spice and a floral cherry blossom note add nuance. The 2017 vintage shows a slightly higher Mizunara proportion than later releases, giving it a more distinctly Japanese character
Savor
Medium-long finish with sandalwood and incense more prominent than in the 2021 or 2022 editions. Dried fruit and dark chocolate from sherry provide sweetness as the Mizunara exoticism fades. A collector's piece that represents the Limited Edition series before the Tsukuriwake concept was formalized

A kaleidoscope of Yamazaki's cask diversity. Strawberry and raspberry from wine casks, sandalwood and incense from Mizunara, dried fruit from sherry, and vanilla from bourbon wood — all in careful balance. Dark chocolate, orange peel, and a floral cherry blossom note. Each sniff reveals a different facet — the blender's art at its most sophisticated
Sip
Multi-dimensional and harmonious. The vatting of four cask types creates layers of complementary flavour — strawberry and cherry from wine wood, dried fruit and dark chocolate from sherry, vanilla and butterscotch from American oak, and sandalwood-incense from Mizunara. The skill is in the balance — no single cask type dominates. Medium-full body with a silky texture. Orange peel, gentle spice, and a hint of coconut from Mizunara. A showcase of Suntory's 'Tsukuriwake' (the art of making) philosophy

Warm amber with golden highlights; medium-full body with moderate legs
Smell
Similar architecture to the 2021 but with subtle differences in cask proportions. More pronounced sherry influence — dark fruit, raisin, and dark chocolate are more forward. The Mizunara sandalwood and incense remain present but as a supporting note. Orange blossom, cinnamon, and coffee. Complex and well-integrated
Sip
Rich and balanced. The sherry-forward character brings dark fruit (raisin, cherry, plum), dark chocolate, and espresso. Mizunara contributes its characteristic sandalwood and incense, while American oak adds vanilla and butterscotch. More structured than the 2021, with firmer tannins and a fuller body. Ginger, cinnamon, and a hint of dried rose. The blending is impeccable — distinctly Yamazaki despite the sherry prominence
Savor
Medium-long finish. Dark chocolate and dried fruit from sherry fade through sandalwood and incense from Mizunara. Espresso and gentle spice linger. Slightly more tannic than the 2021, with a drier oak close. A worthy successor that shows the year-to-year evolution of Yamazaki's limited editions

Sight
Pale gold with a subtle greenish tinge — characteristic of pure Mizunara maturation; bright and delicate with fine legs
Smell
The purest expression of Mizunara oak in the Yamazaki range. Sandalwood is dominant — rich, creamy, and enveloping. Temple incense (kyara), coconut oil, and lemongrass create an aromatic profile entirely unlike anything matured in European or American oak. Beneath the Mizunara, Yamazaki's fruit character emerges — white peach, pear, and subtle cherry. Vanilla, honey, and Japanese cypress (hinoki). This is the taxonomic test case: can the JM8 vignette system capture these notes?
Sip
Utterly unique. The Mizunara oak dominates but in harmony with the spirit. Sandalwood, coconut cream, temple incense, and oriental spice (star anise, clove, lemongrass) create a flavour profile that exists nowhere in the Scotch whisky canon. The spirit provides white peach, pear, and honey as counterpoint. The texture is oily and waxy — Mizunara imparts a distinctive mouthfeel. Light tannins are more astringent than European oak but soften with air. This is the single most taxonomically challenging expression in the dataset — every primary note requires either a new descriptor or a creative mapping
Savor
Long, exotic finish. Sandalwood and incense linger for many minutes, slowly joined by coconut, honey, and fading white peach. The finish has a meditative, almost spiritual quality — the Japanese concept of 'wabi-sabi' in liquid form. Lemongrass and star anise provide a final oriental spice whisper

Light gold with a warm honey tint; bright, clean, and inviting with medium legs

Clean, precise, and malt-forward. The large puncheon cask format allows the spirit to breathe with minimal wood dominance. Honey, vanilla, white peach, and pear — Yamazaki's fruit character in its purest form. Light oak, cereal malt, and a delicate floral note. The absence of sherry or Mizunara influence reveals Yamazaki's naked new-make character aged gracefully in neutral wood
Sip
Elegant simplicity. This is Yamazaki stripped to its essence — honey, vanilla, white peach, clean malt, and gentle oak. The puncheon's large format means less aggressive wood extraction, allowing the spirit's inherent fruit and floral qualities to shine. Light cinnamon, butterscotch, and a hint of cream. The mouthfeel is silky and medium-bodied. A masterclass in restraint — proving that Yamazaki's character is in the spirit itself, not just the exotic casks

Deep burnished amber-mahogany; intensely rich and opulent with slow, viscous legs
Smell
The whisky that won Jim Murray's 'World's Best Whisky 2015' — and the nose explains why. Intensely sherried: raisin, fig, date, dark plum, and Christmas pudding in lavish abundance. Dark chocolate, espresso, orange peel, and ginger cake. But beneath the sherry opulence, Yamazaki's Japanese character persists — a sandalwood-incense note that distinguishes this from any sherried Scotch. Extraordinarily complex and layered
Sip
Opulent, powerful, and perfectly balanced. The first-fill sherry casks deliver maximum impact — dark fruit (raisin, fig, date, plum), dark chocolate, orange marmalade, and gingerbread. The mouthfeel is thick and coating. Yet Yamazaki's inherent elegance prevents the sherry from overwhelming — there is a precision and clarity beneath the richness that a Macallan or GlenDronach does not share. Sandalwood, incense, and subtle coconut from Yamazaki's spirit character provide the Japanese signature. This is Japanese craftsmanship meeting Spanish oak at its most expressive
Savor
Exceptionally long finish. Dark fruit, dark chocolate, espresso, and orange peel fade slowly through sandalwood and incense. The sherry sweetness gives way to gentle tannins and lingering spice. Sandalwood, incense, and coconut — the holy trinity of Mizunara — presented in the Tsukuriwake framework for direct comparison with the Spanish Oak and Peated Malt expressions. Temple incense (kyara) is prominent. White peach, pear, and subtle lemongrass. Honey and light vanilla. More accessible than the 2014 Mizunara release but sharing the same exotic DNA
Sip
The Mizunara character in a more approachable format. Sandalwood, coconut, and temple incense provide the exotic foundation. White peach, pear, and honey from the spirit add sweetness and balance. Lemongrass, star anise, and gentle clove contribute oriental spice complexity. The texture is oily and waxy — Mizunara's distinctive mouthfeel. Less tannic than the 2014 Mizunara, suggesting younger component whiskies that allow the Mizunara to express itself without excessive astringency

Smell
A fascinating cross-cultural experiment — Yamazaki's delicate, fruity spirit character with a gentle peat overlay. The peat here is lighter and more herbal than any Islay expression — think burning autumn leaves rather than maritime bonfire. Beneath the smoke, Yamazaki's white peach, pear, and honey character persists. A subtle sandalwood note and gentle vanilla. Nothing like Scottish peated whisky — this is peat through a Japanese lens
Sip
Delicate and intriguing. The peat is soft, herbal, and almost sweet — entirely different from the medicinal (Laphroaig), tarry (Ardbeg), or dry (Lagavulin) peat characters in the Scottish dataset. It mingles with Yamazaki's fruit (peach, pear) and honey in a way that feels complementary rather than dominant. Light vanilla, butterscotch, and the faintest Mizunara sandalwood from the spirit's inherent character. This expression proves that peat is not a single flavour — it is shaped by the barley's origin, the smoking process, and the spirit character beneath it
Savor
Medium finish. The herbal-sweet peat smoke fades alongside peach and honey. Clean and refreshing rather than smoky and lingering. The antithesis of an Islay finish — proving that peat_ppm alone cannot predict the peat experience

Spanish oak's influence on Yamazaki spirit — a direct comparison to the sherried Scotch canon. Dried fruit (raisin, fig, date), dark chocolate, and orange peel from the oloroso sherry cask. But Yamazaki's inherent fruit character (strawberry, cherry) adds a brightness not found in equivalent Macallan or GlenDronach bottlings. The spirit's subtle sandalwood backbone provides a Japanese accent. Complex, rich, and warm
Sip
Rich and sherried, but with a Japanese precision. Dark fruit (raisin, fig, date), dark chocolate, orange marmalade, and ginger from the Spanish oak. Yamazaki's fruit character adds strawberry and cherry brightness — preventing the heavy, sometimes cloying quality that can affect heavily sherried Scotch. The mouthfeel is full and coating. Espresso, cinnamon, and dried rose. A fascinating comparison piece to the Macallan Sherry Oak range — similar cask type but fundamentally different spirit character beneath
